Blacktoe, a daft name for a Company and web site? Then again there’s a good chance that if you have walked, run, climbed or skied you know all about  "Black Toenails".

Black toenail is more often than not a result of the foot sliding forward in the shoe or boot. Many suffers put it down to just one of those things, but it can be an indication of other problems and it is worth getting it checked out.

When we walk or run weight is put on the foot resulting in the foot stretching, this stretching is known as “elongation”.  When the foot elongates it pushes up against the front of the boot, “toe box”, putting excessive pressure onto the toenails causing it to bruise and often turn black.
Wrongly fitted shoes or boots can lead to black toe nails. If they are too loose the foot elongates and slides into the front of the toe box. If the foot is rigid in the shoe or boot but poorly fitted the foot may still push into the front of the toe box, especially on steep down hill sections. Sometimes this will push the toenail backwards bruising the area from where the toenail grows, the toenail turns black, and a new toenail grows underneath the bruised toenail, which will eventually fall off.
The shape and size of the foot needs to be carefully matched to the footwear, it is worth paying the extra to be fitted by experienced fitters. Shoe beds, again properly fitted can help eliminate the problems.
